Buy a template or commission a custom design? Decide on budget and time, not taste

The question is usually framed wrong. People ask "are templates any good", when the real question is "does what I need fit inside a template".

A template is not a stripped-down custom design. It is a finished product for a common problem. When your problem is that problem, the template wins on every measure — including quality, because it has been debugged across many real deployments.

The one-sentence test

Write down the three most important things a customer does on your website.

If those three are browse a list, view a detail page, leave their contact details — you have a template problem. That is the shape of nearly every business website: a catalogue, detail pages, a contact form. Paying somebody to draw that structure from scratch is paying for work already done a thousand times.

If one of the three involves the customer entering data and getting a calculated result back — a size from measurements, a price from specifications, a booking against each practitioner's free slots — you have left template territory.

The honest comparison

TemplateCustom design
Time to live2–7 days4–10 weeks
Cost1.7–20 million VND25–60 million VND
InterfaceDesigned for the industryDrawn for your brand
Technical riskLow — already running elsewhereMedium — first time live
Later changesInside the template: easyAnywhere: easy, with the source
What you must supplyContent, photos, logoContent, photos, logo, brand guide, meeting time

That last row is the one everybody skips. Custom design needs your time: approving wireframes, approving colours, approving every page. If you are running a shop and cannot find six to eight hours a week for two months to review designs, a custom project will slip — and it will slip because of that, not because of the agency.

When a template is the wrong choice

Three clear cases:

The brand is the product. If customers pay a premium for how the brand feels — high-end interiors, a resort, designer jewellery — then looking like another website is a real loss, not an aesthetic quibble.

The business logic lives in the interface. Booking against individual staff shifts, configuring products with interdependent variants, pricing from a per-customer rate card. No template contains these, and forcing them in with plugins usually costs more than building them.

You need integrations. Talking to the accounting software you already run, syncing stock with a marketplace, pushing orders to a courier. Integration is the expensive part, and it is no cheaper on a template base.

When custom is the wrong choice

You do not yet know what the website is for. The most common and most expensive case. Designing for an unclear goal produces revision loops, and every loop is money. The cheaper path: run a template for three months, watch what real customers do, then commission custom work with data in hand.

You have a deadline. An opening, a trade fair, a season. Four weeks is not enough for a decent custom project, and a rushed custom project ships worse than a template.

Your budget is under 25 million VND. Below that, "custom" is usually a template recoloured and renamed. You pay a custom price for a template product.

The third path, rarely offered

Buy the template, then pay to customise the part that earns.

This is what we recommend to most clients. Take a finished template as the foundation — page structure, speed, technical SEO and an admin area all included — then spend the design budget on exactly the two or three places that drive revenue: the home page, your flagship product page, the enquiry flow.

It typically costs a third of a custom build, takes a quarter of the time, and the part customers see most is still uniquely yours. That is how our service works: a template underneath, your work on top.

One condition makes this possible: you must own the template's full source code. A locked template cannot be modified, and then you are back at the start.

Deciding in five minutes

Answer three questions, one line each:

  1. What does a customer do — look and enquire, or enter data and get a result?
  2. How many days until you need to be live?
  3. How many hours a week can you give to design reviews?

If the answer to (1) is "look and enquire", (2) is under 30 days, or (3) is under five hours — buy the template. All three point the same way, and none of them is about budget.
